'Sanam Teri Kasam' becomes first re-release to surpass ₹50 crore
What's the story
The 2016 film Sanam Teri Kasam, starring Harshvardhan Rane and Mawra Hocane, has set a new record at the Indian box office with its re-release. It stands as the first re-released film to cross the ₹50cr mark.
The movie's initial release was a dud but it became a hit on satellite television, prompting the public to demand its re-release in theaters, which was realized on February 7, 2025.
Producer's reaction
Producer Deepak Mukut expressed joy over the film's success
Producer Deepak Mukut took to Instagram to express his happiness, "You didn't just watch it, you lived it! #SanamTeriKasam is breaking records, and it's all because of your unstoppable love!"
Earlier this month, he told Mid-day that the decision to re-release the film was prompted by fans who came to their office asking for a Valentine's week release.
Despite initial doubts about competition from other films like Deva and Loveyapa, strong bookings on online platforms convinced him to proceed.
Financial success
'Sanam Teri Kasam's re-release proved financially successful
Mukut revealed that while the film's first release in 2016 incurred a ₹25cr loss, the re-release has been a money-spinner.
"We have almost 400 screens across 350 cinemas. Exhibitors have been increasing shows organically," he said.
This change in fortune goes on to show how dedicated fans and perfect timing can make all the difference in a film's box office performance.
Casting journey
Rane's casting story: A tale of persistence and determination
Rane's casting in Sanam Teri Kasam is a testimony of his determination.
He told IANS he came for the audition four months late when another actor was already signed for the lead.
Though he was asked to leave, Rane insisted on giving his audition which was later seen by the directors.
They were so impressed with his performance that they decided to cast him as the lead, even if it meant changing all the costumes prepared for the original actor.
