Salman tops Forbes India Celebrity 100 list, SRK ranks 13th
Salman Khan enjoys immense popularity in India, and bhaijaan always makes the news with whatever he says or does. His popularity seems to be validated by this year's Forbes India Celebrity 100 List. Topping this list seems to have become Salman's habit, as he managed it for the third consecutive time. On the other hand, his arch-rival Shah Rukh Khan has dropped to 13th position.
What parameters are considered by Forbes
The Forbes List is calculated based on earnings of celebrities within a fixed period of consideration. In this case, the period falls between October 1, 2017, and September 30, 2018. Within this period, revenues from film releases, brand endorsements and television show appearances are considered.
Salman earned Rs. 253.25 crore within the consideration period
So, within the consideration period, the 52-year-old actor became the highest paid celebrity in India, managing to earn Rs. 253.25 crore. Notably, this is the third time Salman has topped this list. The Race 3 actor's sources of revenue come primarily from film releases, which are usually blockbusters due to massive fan following, television show appearances and brand endorsements, which are extremely lucrative.
Sachin Tendulkar featured in top 10, despite retiring in 2013
The second spot is held by beloved cricketer Virat Kohli who earned Rs. 228.09 crore. Akshay Kumar held third place with Rs. 185 crore. However, Shah Rukh Khan slipped to 13th place with Rs. 56 crore since he did not have any films during the consideration period. Legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar featured in the top 10 with Rs. 80 crore, despite retiring in 2013.
Breaking the glass ceiling, Deepika comes in top 5
Deepika Padukone, ranked 4th in the list with earnings of Rs. 112.8 crore, becomes the first woman to break the glass ceiling and rank among the top 5 positions since the list came into existence in 2012. However, despite Deepika's phenomenal success in the rankings, the overall number of women in the list has gone down to 18 this year from 21 in 2017.
A lucrative year for the stars
Despite the fickle nature of stardom and varying volumes of work, 2018 has been more lucrative for celebrities than 2017, as the 100 celebrities reported a cumulative earning of Rs. 3,140.25 crore, which is 17% higher than 2017's cumulative earnings of Rs. 2,683 crore.
