SAG Awards: Nominations announced, Golden Globes snub given recognition
The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards has announced the nominations for the 2021 slate. Hosted by Daveed Diggs of Hamilton, Snowpiercer fame and Lily Collins (Emily in Paris and Mank), the nominations were announced on the Instagram handle of SAG. They were strikingly different than that of its Golden Globes counterpart, released on Wednesday, and gave nods to significant ones ignored by the latter.
'Da 5 Bloods' wins significantly, Boseman gets two posthumous nominations
Da 5 Bloods, neglected by the 78th Golden Globes, received three SAG nominations. The categories were: Outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture, outstanding performance by an actor in a supporting role (Chadwick Boseman) and outstanding action performance. Boseman got a second nomination too, for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role (Ma Rainey's Black Bottom).
'The Crown' dominated female drama nominations, three actors featured
The Crown dominated Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series category by getting three nominations, followed by Ozark. Its male counterpart has one nomination each from Ozark, This is Us, Bridgerton, Better Call Saul and The Crown. Schitt's Creek got four nods out of ten in the comedy series category (male and female combined). Mank's single nomination is surprising though.
'Mank': Six Golden Globes nods, but just one SAG!
Mank received maximum Golden Globes nominations for a film, a total of six. The David Fincher directorial is led by Gary Oldman, who got recognized in both the award nomination announcements. He plays alcoholic screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz in this movie, set in 1930s Hollywood.
Miniseries/TV movie: 'The Undoing', 'The Queen's Gambit' score well
Television Movie or Miniseries categories had The Undoing (Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant) and The Queen's Gambit (Anya Taylor-Joy and Bill Camp) as recurring title nominations. Mulan and Wonder Woman 1984 made their only appearances in the action category for motion pictures, while Cobra Kai, The Boys, Lovecraft Country, The Mandalorian and Westworld vied for top action spot in comedy or drama category.
'I May Destroy You', 'Minari' get their due recognition here
Minari and I May Destroy You received their due acknowledgement in SAG 2021 nominations, after their disappointing Golden Globes snub. While Steven Yeun won a nomination for the best male actor in a lead role, his Minari female co-star Youn Yuh-Jung got one for the supporting role. I May Destroy You writer, co-director and actor Michaela Coel got shortlisted in the TV movie/miniseries category.
