Rowoon opens about his grumpy character in K-drama 'The Matchmakers'
Former SF9 K-pop member and South Korean actor Rowoon is set to transport audiences to a bygone era with his upcoming series, The Matchmakers. Recently, KBS2 dropped the character posters that exude Rowoon's regal style. In a recent interview, the actor shared his motivations for joining the historical drama and teased details about his character.
Before going ahead, know everything about 'The Matchmakers'
The Matchmakers is poised to transport viewers to the Joseon dynasty, where they will meet Shim Jung-woo (Rowoon), a young widower. His path crosses with Jung Soon-deok, portrayed by Cho Yi-hyun, a young widow. Together, they undertake the task of arranging marriages for unmarried individuals who have surpassed the typical prime age. Directed by Hwang Seung-gi, The Matchmakers will be available on Viki starting October 30.
'He's a child-like character whose time has stopped': Rowoon
Rowoon shared in the interview that he joined The Matchmakers to challenge himself in the comedy genre, stating, "I wanted to take on the challenge of the comedy genre. Actually, I think comedy is the most difficult genre." He also described his character Shim as a child-like person, adding, "I think he is a person who could be seen as rude due to his honesty."
What were the challenges faced by Rowoon while portraying Shim?
Discussing the challenges of portraying Shim, Rowoon remarked, "There are parts where Shim's words [coming] from the historical or situational background may feel a little different from [sentiments of] the current times. I tried to express those parts without making him seem hateful." In this drama, the actor takes on the role of a widowed son-in-law of the king. His fate takes a dark turn when the princess he was meant to marry passes away during their wedding ceremony.
Meanwhile, meet Cho who takes on the role of Jung
Cho will take upon double roles in The Matchmakers. She will be seen as Jung, the second daughter-in-law of a respectable family, who leads a secret life as Yeo Joo, Hanyan City's finest matchmaker. KBS2 treated fans to fresh stills of Cho's transformation, offering a glimpse of her vibrant persona as Yeo as well as her modest demeanor as Jung. Cho's most notable appearances include Hospital Playlist and All of Us Are Dead.
