Depp to receive Lifetime Achievement Award at Rome Film Festival
The Rome Film Festival has announced that it will honor Hollywood actor Johnny Depp with a Lifetime Achievement Award at its 2024 edition. The festival will also screen Depp's latest directorial venture, Modi - Three Days on the Wing of Madness, according to Deadline. The project explores the life of bohemian artist Amedeo Modigliani during a 72-hour period in war-ravaged Paris in 1916.
'Modi' to be screened at Rome Film Festival
Modi, which features Antonia Desplat and Riccardo Scamarcio, revolves around Modigliani's struggles as he mulls ending his career and leaving Paris while being pursued by the police. His fellow artists Maurice Utrillo, Chaim Soutine, and his muse Beatrice Hastings resist his decision. The film also stars Maurice Gangnat, Stephen Graham, Bruno Gouery, Ryan McParland, and Sally Phillips.
Modigliani's critical encounter with American collector
Modigliani's night of hallucinations intensifies as he seeks advice from his friend- art dealer Leopold Zborowski. This leads to a crucial meeting with American collector Maurice Gangnat, which could potentially change his life. After its premiere at the San Sebastian Film Festival, Modi is scheduled to be screened next in Rome.
Rome Film Festival to honor Viggo Mortensen
The Rome Film Festival will also present a Lifetime Achievement Award to Viggo Mortensen, who will showcase his film The Dead Don't Hurt. The film tells the story of Vivienne Le Coudy, played by Vicky Krieps, and her complex relationship with Danish immigrant Holgen Olsen, portrayed by Mortensen. Their love story unfolds against the backdrop of the 1860s American Civil War.
Festival schedule and Depp's return to directing
The 2024 Rome Film Festival is set to run from October 16 to 27. Modi will be featured in the non-competitive Grand Public section. This marks Depp's return to directing after over a decade, with his last directorial debut being the Marlon Brando-starrer The Brave. Despite his legal battle with ex-wife Amber Heard, Depp has remained active in the film industry, appearing at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival and starring in Maiwenn's Jeanne du Barry.
