As fans eagerly await the release of Gladiator II, director Ridley Scott has already hinted at a possible third installment. In a recent interview with French film magazine Premiere, the Hollywood director revealed that he's "already toying" with the idea of Gladiator III. He also shared some potential plot details for the would-be threequel, comparing the ending of Gladiator II to The Godfather Part II.
Scott compares 'Gladiator II' ending to 'The Godfather'
Scott drew a parallel between the ending of Gladiator II and The Godfather, where Michael Corleone finds himself in a position he didn't want. He said, "I'm already toying with the idea of Gladiator III. No, seriously! I've lit the fuse... The ending of Gladiator II is reminiscent of The Godfather, with Michael Corleone finding himself with a job he didn't want."
'Gladiator II' plot and cast details
Gladiator II follows the story of Lucius Verus, played by Paul Mescal, who is the grandson of Emperor Marcus Aurelius and former heir to the throne. He lives in obscurity with his family in Numidia, estranged from his mother Lucilla (Connie Nielsen). However, his life takes a turn when General Marcus Acacius (Pedro Pascal) and fellow Roman soldiers capture him and force him into slavery.
Scott claims 'Gladiator II' is as good as the original
Scott, who saw the original Gladiator win five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Russell Crowe, has high hopes for the sequel. He recently stated that Gladiator II is the "best thing I've ever made." Furthermore, he and Paramount Pictures executives have been promoting the sequel's action sequences, claiming they are some of the best in Hollywood history.
'Gladiator II' to feature biggest action sequence, says Scott
In an interview with Empire, Scott shared that Gladiator II begins with "probably the biggest action sequence I've ever done." He also teased a scene where Mescal's Lucius faces a rhinoceros in the Colosseum. Scott explained how they used computerization and AI to create the rhino for the scene. "I can have a computer read every molecule and wrinkle on a rhino," he said. Gladiator II will be released in November.
