Gold smuggling case: Ranya Rao's DGP stepfather under probe
What's the story
The Karnataka government has ordered a probe against K Ramachandra Rao, a DGP (Director General of Police) rank officer, over his stepdaughter-Kannada actor Ranya Rao's alleged involvement in a gold smuggling case.
The probe will be conducted by Additional Chief Secretary Gaurav Gupta.
Rao is currently serving as the Managing Director of the Karnataka State Police Housing and Infrastructure Development Corporation.
Seizure details
Gold bars seized from Ranya at Kempegowda International Airport
The investigation was initiated after gold bars worth ₹12.56 crore were seized from Ranya at Kempegowda International Airport.
Subsequently, searches of her residence revealed gold jewelry worth ₹2.06 crore and Indian currency amounting to ₹2.67 crore.
The Chief Minister's office announced Gupta's appointment on Tuesday, with the order being issued on Monday night.
Reaction
No word from the Rao family yet
So far, neither Ramachandra nor his stepdaughter has commented on the fresh allegations.
However, there are reports that Ranya allegedly used her stepfather's influence to evade customs and traveled to Dubai four times in 15 days.
On March 4, a special court sent her to judicial custody until March 18.
She later accused DRI officials of verbal harassment, but the agency denied it, citing CCTV footage as proof.
