Rani Mukerji is all set to reprise her role as the powerful policewoman Shivani Shivaji Roy in the next installment of the Mardaani franchise, announced YRF on Thursday. According to Pinkvilla, the 46-year-old actor will begin filming for Mardaani 3 in early 2025. The Mardaani series, which began in 2014, has been a significant success and one of the few female-led franchises in Indian cinema.
'Mardaani' 3 script in final stages
Sources close to the project revealed to the portal that Mukerji and Yash Raj Films (YRF) have been working on the script for Mardaani 3 with an in-house team of writers. The script is now in its final stages and the film will soon move into pre-production. "They have finally green-lit an idea that does justice to the legacy of part one and two," the source said.
Film to feature a strong antagonist
Similar to the previous two films, the third chapter will also feature a strong antagonist. "The franchise is known for menacing villains. The journey shall continue in the new chapter, as the makers will be pitting a strong personality against Rani Mukerji," the source added. The first two films had Tahir Raj Bhasin and Vishal Jethwa playing the villains, both of whom received praise for their performances.
Mukerji excited to return as Shivani Shivaji Roy
Mukerji is reportedly excited to return to the action-packed role of Roy. "She loves playing Shivani Shivaji Roy, as it's an empowering and strong character. It's rare for a female lead to spearhead a franchise in India, and Rani is doing that with Mardaani," the source added. The film will be released in theaters, continuing Mukerji's commitment to big-screen exclusivity.
Mukerji to complete other projects before 'Mardaani' 3
Before starting work on Mardaani 3, Mukerji is expected to wrap up shooting for director Shonali Bose's family dramedy for Junglee Pictures. The Mardaani franchise has been a hit with audiences and critics alike, with the first film earning a National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. Notably, Mukerji was last seen in Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway (2023).
