How Aamir Khan shaped iconic 'Rang De Basanti' ending
Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan had once disclosed that he was instrumental in altering the climax of the critically acclaimed film Rang De Basanti. Directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, this iconic movie is renowned for its exploration of patriotism and social responsibility among India's youth. The film's ensemble cast includes Kunal Kapoor, Sharman Joshi, Siddharth Narayan, Soha Ali Khan, R Madhavan, and Alice Patten alongside Khan.
Khan's dissatisfaction with the original climax
In a video that has been circulating online now, Khan expressed his dissatisfaction with the original ending of Rang De Basanti. He revealed that Mehra had initially planned for the protagonists to assassinate the defense minister and then attempt to flee the city, only to be killed at different locations. However, Khan found this conclusion lacking in coherence and impact.
Khan's alternative climax suggestion for 'Rang De Basanti'
Khan proposed an alternative ending to Mehra, drawing inspiration from a story he had written years ago. He suggested that the characters should not flee but instead take over a television studio and communicate their message live to the public. This idea was inspired by the parallel drawn between the film's characters and freedom fighter Bhagat Singh who didn't run away after his revolutionary acts.
Khan's idea was incorporated into the film
Mehra was convinced by Khan's suggestion and incorporated it into Rang De Basanti. The actor shared, "I took that and told Mehra that I had this story and I will now not make it because the climax is gone... But he liked it and we fitted that climax scene into Rang De Basanti." This revised ending emphasized the power of courage and conviction, showing how the protagonists owned up to their actions.
