Was Ranbir Kapoor original choice for 'Raanjhanaa'? Director reveals truth
Director Aanand L. Rai has finally put an end to the persistent rumors surrounding the casting of his 2013 romantic drama, Raanjhanaa—starring Dhanush and Sonam Kapoor. While there had been persistent speculation about Ranbir Kapoor being the initial choice for the lead role, Rai has clarified these speculations in a recent interview. The film also starred Abhay Deol and Kumud Mishra.
Rai praised Kapoor's acting skills
Rai praised Kapoor's skills and said, "An actor who keeps himself simple and lets himself blend into the crowd—which is a difficult thing—I believe, is Ranbir Kapoor." However, he was unavailable during the casting process. "As we were searching for such an actor, we found Dhanush," Rai added. Thus, the film marked Dhanush's iconic entry into Hindi cinema.
The story 'needed to be told'
Speaking to Bollywood Hungama, Rai emphasized that the casting choice for Raanjhanaa was crucial. "As a director who had just tasted success with Tanu Weds Manu, if I had more faith in myself, I would have made Tanu Weds Manu 2. But I and Himanshu (Sharma) felt that a story like Raanjhanaa needed to be told." "We figured out that what has worked for us is our story, being true to our story and casting."
Dhanush to reunite with Rai for 'Tere Ishk Mein'
In related news, Dhanush will re-collaborate with Rai for Tere Ishk Mein. The film was announced last year with a projected release date within this year, but official confirmation about it is still pending. Reports suggest that Kriti Sanon will be cast opposite Dhanush in Tere Ishk Mein. The shooting is expected to commence in October this year.
