Ramesh Sippy: News

Honored with the Padma Shri Award by the Government of India in 2013, Ramesh Sippy is one of the best directors and producers in India. Born in Karachi of British India, Sippy moved to India with his family after India's partition. He was intrigued by acting when he visited the sets of his father's first film 'Sazaa' (1961), at the age of six. Sippy started his career as a child artist in 1953 with the movie 'Shahenshah'. Before making his directorial debut with the 1971 film 'Andaz', which became a huge box office hit, he worked as an assistant director for seven years. Sippy's next two movies, 'Seeta Aur Geeta' (1972) and 'Sholay' (1975), are still among the most iconic films of Hindi cinema. Even though most of his films later were a success on the big screen, none of the movies could match the success of 'Sholay'. In 2005, he received Filmfare Best Film of 50 Years Award for 'Sholay'. In 2015, Sippy returned to directing movies after 20 years with the film 'Shimla Mirchi'. However, it remained unreleased for five years and finally dropped on Netflix in 2020. The same year, he was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award by Filmfare.
