'Cautious of being typecast,' Rajpal Yadav aims to diversify roles
Rajpal Yadav, celebrated for his comedic prowess in Indian cinema, is actively working to broaden his acting range and evade typecasting. With over two decades of experience in the film industry, Yadav has gained recognition through his slapstick comedy in cameos and supporting roles. In a recent interview with DNA, he discussed his career progression and ongoing efforts to break free from typecasting.
Yadav's conscious efforts to avoid typecasting
Yadav's rise to prominence began with early 2000s films like Hungama, Waqt, and Chup Chup Ke. However, he was being offered similar roles. "I am so thankful that I was aware of being typecast. I have been cautious of this for 20 years now," Yadav reflected in the interview. "On the one hand, people remember my 'mandir ka ghanta' dialogue from Hungama, but on the other hand, they also remember me from Main Madhuri Dixit Banna Chahti Hoon."
Yadav's strategy for balancing commercial and meaningful cinema
To ensure a diverse portfolio, Yadav adopted a strategy of balancing commercial films with more meaningful roles. "My motto has been to do four commercial films and one meaningful film a year," he explained. "That ensures that films like Chup Chup Ke and Main, Meri Patni Aur Woh releaae around the same time. Even this year, I have just seen the release of Kaam Chalu Hai, while working on Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3."
Recent work and future projects
Yadav is currently celebrating the release of Kaam Chalu Hai, a film where he portrays a grieving father fighting against the system, stepping away from his usual comedic roles. He stated, "Films are of many types. Some are for entertainment and some for raising awareness." "90% of my films are from that 100-crore club. Because big commercial films have that niche where I am cast. But, films like Kaam Chalu Hai are the kinds of films that match my taste."
