'Trying to be careful, cautious'—'Ramayana' producer reveals film's global ambitions
What's the story
Namit Malhotra, the producer of the much-anticipated Bollywood film Ramayana, has said he hopes the project will be a global sensation.
Speaking to Hindustan Times, he shared his vision for the film and how it could change the face of Indian cinema.
Directed by Nitesh Tiwari and featuring Yash, Ranbir Kapoor, and Sai Pallavi, the movie is among India's costliest films yet.
It will be released in two parts in 2026 and 2027.
International potential
Malhotra's vision for 'Ramayana's' global impact
Malhotra, who heads the VFX studio DNEG, is confident about Ramayana's ability to make a mark internationally.
He said, "I do not doubt that it does (have the potential). In fact, it's down to us and how we can actually bring it to the world."
"And that is where there's a massive responsibility in doing that."
Narrative focus
'Ramayana' team's approach to storytelling
Malhotra stressed the need to tell the story of Ramayana with care and sensitivity.
He noted that this opportunity is rare and is a big deal for India.
"That's why we're trying to be very careful and cautious, that we do it with the utmost care and with the utmost sensitivity."
"Because, you know, this opportunity does not come again and again, and it's the moment for India right now."
Global aspiration
Malhotra's ambition to elevate Indian storytelling
Malhotra said he wanted to not just make India proud, but also "excite the world about Indian storytelling and really celebrate global cinema together."
He mentioned Hollywood films such as Oppenheimer and Forrest Gump, saying their stories are universal.
"I believe this is universal too. This is that opportunity that I believe I'm pretty fortunate to have received in my life, and I hope I can deliver."
The film also stars Sunny Deol, Ravi Dubey, Lara Dutta, and Arun Govil.
