Priyamani opens up about facing hate for interfaith marriage

Actor Priyamani, who married filmmaker Mustafa Raj in 2017, has now spoken about the online hate they received for their interfaith marriage.
Speaking to Filmfare, she revealed that accusations of "love jihad" on social media affected her deeply.
"When I announced my engagement...I don't know for what rhyme or reason, unnecessary hate started pouring in," she said.
Online abuse
'They said our kids would join ISIS'
The actor also revealed the extent of the online abuse, saying trolls suggested their future children would join ISIS.
"They even went to the extent of saying that, when we have kids tomorrow, they would join ISIS."
She said she was frustrated over these comments, wondering why people felt the need to attack someone they didn't know.

'Took a toll on me for 2-3 days'
Priyamani confessed that the comments affected her deeply. She said, "It took a toll on me for 2-3 days because I kept getting a lot of messages."
She added that even now if she posts something with Raj, nine out of 10 comments will be about their religion or caste.
Despite this, the couple has chosen not to respond to these comments.

On the professional front, Priyamani was last seen in the Malayalam thriller Officer on Duty. In 2024, she appeared in the Telugu film Bhamakalapam 2 and Hindi films Article 370 and Maidaan.
Her next project is Jana Nayagan, which will be actor Vijay's last film before he retires from acting to enter politics.
