Popular singer Udit Narayan receives death threats, seeks cops' help
Bollywood playback singer Udit Narayan sought help from the anti-extortion cell (AEC) of the Mumbai crime branch after receiving numerous death threats. According to media reports, Narayan alleged that an unknown person has been abusing and threatening him for over a month. Although no FIR has been filed yet, cops have tracked the (stolen) mobile phone, from which the calls were being made.
Accused claimed he knew Narayan's routine, places he frequents
As per a report published in Hindustan Times, Narayan received around three such calls in the last month. The caller, who identified himself as Laxman, claimed to know when Narayan leaves his house and the places he frequently visits. According to Bharat Gaikwad, senior police inspector of Amboli police station, Laxman "has been abusing and threatening Narayan."
Police personnel deployed outside Narayan's house in plain clothes
"We've recorded the statement of Udit Narayan. As there had been a threat, as per the SOP (standard operating procedure), the statement was sent to the AEC for inquiry," the officer said. Reports also suggested that police have increased their patrolling outside Narayan's residence. Also, cops have been "deployed in the vicinity in plain clothes to keep a constant watch on suspicious people."
Suspected number was registered in name of building's security guard
Notably, the number from which the calls were made to the singer was registered in the name of the security guard of Narayan's building. During interrogation, the guard revealed that his phone was stolen three months ago, when he was traveling to his hometown in Bihar. Cops suspect that the caller might have gotten Narayan's number from the stolen mobile.
