Another controversy! Peacock removes 2024 Paris Olympics's breakdancing clips
The 2024 Paris Olympics marked the debut of breaking, also known as breakdancing, as a competitive event. However, just six days after its introduction, Peacock has removed the entire breaking competition from its platform. This move reportedly leaves only four clips on the Breaking hub, none of which feature actual Olympic performances. Notably, the decision to exclude breaking from the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics was made before this development.
Controversy surrounding Australian breaker Raygun
The removal of breaking content from Peacock follows a controversy involving Australian breaker Rachael Gunn, also known as Raygun. The 36-year-old went viral after losing all three breaking battles she participated in, scoring zero points. Critics argue that Raygun's performance tarnished the sport's Olympic debut. Rumors circulated suggesting that her husband was part of the Olympic breaking selection committee, but these have been refuted by the Australian Breaking Committee.
Raygun responds to criticism and harassment
In response to the backlash, Raygun posted a video message on her Instagram page addressing the criticism and harassment she has faced. She expressed her disappointment over the hate she received and thanked her supporters. Raygun also addressed the allegations of manipulating the Olympic selection process, directing these accusations to the Australian Breaking Committee, which has already publicly denied these claims.
Possible reasons for removal of breaking content
While Raygun's performance has drawn attention to the sport, it does not explain why no competitive breaking performances are available on Peacock. Some online theorists suggest that the removal could be due to music rights issues. This theory is supported by the fact that Peacock's viewing hub for artistic swimming, another sport that uses music in performances, is also nearly empty.
Peacock's statement on removal of Olympic content
When contacted, Peacock confirmed that "the Olympics hub will be accessible on the Peacock home page from the main navigation menu until August 20, at which time the Paralympics hub will replace it and be available until September 9." "Peacock subscribers can also access and search for Olympics and Paralympics content in the Sports hub until December 31, 2024, though full replays for some sports were available only through the end of the Games."
