'Pathaan' to 'Stree 2': The elite ₹500cr club of Bollywood
The Indian film industry witnessed a significant resurgence post the COVID-19 pandemic, with several Bollywood movies achieving remarkable box office success. The first Hindi film to cross the ₹500cr mark was Baahubali 2 in 2017. However, it was not until recently that other Bollywood films managed to achieve this feat, starting with Pathaan in 2023. Here are the five films that have crossed this milestone.
'Pathaan' and 'Gadar 2' set new records
Shah Rukh Khan's Pathaan, released in January 2023, not only entered the ₹500cr club but also surpassed Baahubali 2 to become an all-time grosser for Hindi cinema. Soon after, Sunny Deol's Gadar 2 managed to outperform Pathaan despite competing with OMG 2 at the box office. Directed by Anil Sharma, it also starred Ameesha Patel and continues the story of Gadar, released in 2001.
'Jawan,' 'Animal,' and 'Stree 2' joined the ₹500cr club
SRK's Jawan quickly surpassed Gadar 2's record, setting new benchmarks at the box office. Subsequently, despite clashing with Sam Bahadur and receiving an A-rating, Animal became the fourth Bollywood film to cross the ₹500cr mark in Hindi. The most recent addition to this elite club is Stree 2, which, despite competing with Khel Khel Mein and Vedaa, set new records from its opening day itself.
'Stree 2' is currently the highest grossing Bollywood film
Stree 2 is not only a member of the ₹500cr club but also the highest grossing Bollywood film to date. The movie's success has been attributed to its unique storyline and stellar performances by the cast, comprising Shraddha Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao, and Pankaj Tripathi, among others. With an estimated collection of ₹585cr, Stree 2 has re-written box office history.
