Elliot Page is cinematically developing novel 'The Darkness Outside Us'
Pageboy Productions, led by Oscar-nominated actor Elliot Page, has obtained the rights to adapt the 2021 young adult sci-fi novel The Darkness Outside Us into a feature film. The novel, written by Eliot Schrefer, tells a captivating love story between two young men from rival nations on a space rescue mission. In a joint statement, Page and his partners praised Schrefer's work as "subversive and deeply human at its core."
Why does this story matter?
Schrefer's literary journey began with his debut novel Glamorous Disasters in 2006. Later, he gained widespread recognition for his young adult novels Endangered (2012) and Threatened (2014). Notably, The Darkness Outside Us marks his maiden novel to be adapted into a film! Spearheading the project is Page, renowned for their roles in Juno (2007), Inception (2010), X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014), Tallulah (2016), and Close to You (2023).
Novel's cinematic adaptation excites the production team
The team at Pageboy Productions is eager to transform The Darkness Outside Us into a cinematic experience. "This book is exactly the type of story we want to champion at PAGEBOY," they said. The team described the novel as "a complex love story, inventive thriller, and a space epic with twists at every turn." Schrefer also expressed his enthusiasm about the forthcoming adaptation, praising Pageboy Productions as an "agile, young, motivated production company that's buzzy in Hollywood."
Pageboy Productions's previous ventures and future plans
Pageboy Productions, established by Page in 2021, has been involved in projects such as Close to You, featuring Page himself, and the Toronto Film Fest title Backspot. Both Page and his production company are represented by several agencies including UTA and VIE Entertainment. Schrefer is represented by Richard Pine of Inkwell along with UTA. Meanwhile, a sequel to The Darkness Outside Us, titled The Brightness Between Us, is scheduled for release in October.
