Why Nicole Kidman found erotic thriller 'Babygirl' 'very freeing'
Hollywood star Nicole Kidman has described her upcoming erotic thriller, Babygirl, as a "liberating story" for women. Speaking at the Venice Film Festival press conference, Kidman said the film explores themes of sex, desire, inner thoughts, secrets, marriage, truth, power, and consent. The movie is set to have its North American premiere at the Toronto Film Festival before releasing on December 25.
'Babygirl' is one woman's story, says Kidman
In Babygirl, Kidman plays a high-powered CEO who risks her career and family for a passionate affair with her much younger intern, portrayed by Harris Dickinson. The film also features Antonio Banderas, Sophie Wilde, and Esther McGregor. "This is one woman's story and this is, I hope, a very liberating story," said Kidman. She added that the film was "very dear to our shared instincts and very freeing."
Kidman praises director Halina Reijn's approach
Kidman praised the film's director, Halina Reijn, for her unique approach. "It's told by a woman, through her gaze — Halina wrote it and she directed it — and that's to me what made it so unique," she said. Kidman also highlighted the importance of working with a female director, saying it made her feel comfortable and protected on set.
Reijn's film addresses 'huge orgasm gap'
Reijn, who has previously collaborated with filmmaker Paul Verhoeven, said she wanted her erotic feature to focus on the "female gaze." She also mentioned that the film aims to address the "huge orgasm gap" between men and women.
