'Ancient Apocalypse': Keanu Reeves joins controversial series for Season 2
Netflix has confirmed the return of its popular yet contentious series, Ancient Apocalypse, for a second season. The upcoming installment will see British journalist and author Graham Hancock explore the Americas, accompanied by Hollywood star Keanu Reeves. However, the show has faced criticism from indigenous groups and professional archeologists. Despite these controversies, Netflix maintains that the first season performed well among viewers. Season 2 will land on October 16.
Hancock to investigate lost civilization theory in Season 2
In Ancient Apocalypse: The Americas, Hancock will delve into his theory of a forgotten advanced civilization that vanished during the cataclysms ending the last Ice Age, approximately 12,800 to 11,600 years ago. The upcoming season will feature episodes set in various locations across the Americas, including New Mexico, Peru, and Brazil. As revealed in the trailer, Reeves will accompany Hancock throughout the series, offering his unique perspective on storytelling as a cultural preservation tool.
Filming faces opposition from indigenous groups
Despite its popularity, Ancient Apocalypse has faced significant backlash. Indigenous groups in Arizona have protested against the filming of the second season in their state. However, ITN Productions has defended its decision to film in these locations, stating that it was made on an editorial basis. The first season also generated criticism from the Society for American Archaeology, which accused the show of publicly disparaging archeologists and devaluing the archeological profession based on false claims and disinformation.
Hancock and ITN Productions respond to criticism
In response, Hancock stated, "Exploring the mysterious origins of civilization has been my passion for many years." "The Americas have remained largely unexplored in this context and my purpose in the series was to examine compelling new evidence that I hope might spark healthy debate in the archeology community." Ian Russell, Head of International Programmes at ITN Productions, added that Hancock is known as a disrupter who challenges traditional ideas about this period of history.
'Ancient Apocalypse: The Americas's production details
Ancient Apocalypse: The Americas is executive produced by Bruce Kennedy and directed by Marc Tiley for ITN Productions. The post-production process is being overseen by Ed Bengoa. Despite the controversies surrounding the show, its unique exploration of ancient civilizations and the inclusion of Reeves in the upcoming season are likely to draw significant viewer interest. The first season was released in November 2022.
