K-drama: Crime thriller 'Connection' outperforms Netflix's 'The Atypical Family'
Netflix's popular series, The Atypical Family, is witnessing a slump in ratings as the new South Korean crime thriller, Connection, takes the lead. The weekly K-drama ratings reveal that since its debut on Friday (May 24) by SBS, Connection has become the most-watched miniseries across all time slots! This surge in popularity has even allowed it to surpass the previously dominant black comedy, Bitter Sweet Hell.
'The Atypical Family' faced rating slump on TV and Netflix
The Atypical Family, led by Jang Ki-yong, is experiencing a decline in domestic ratings and has also slipped in Netflix rankings. The show saw its ratings plunge to 3.5% at the start of its second season run, slipping from sixth to eighth place in Netflix's non-English category. If the show fails to recover in its upcoming episodes, it risks falling out of the top 10 non-English categories in global viewership.
What is 'The Atypical Family' all about?
For those unaware, The Atypical Family centers on Bok Gwi-ju (Jang) and his family, who possess superpowers but are gradually losing them due to chronic illnesses and the challenges of modern life. Their lives take a turn when they cross paths with Do Da-hae (Chun Woo-hee). To note, the show hit its peak nationwide (South Korea) rating with its sixth episode, garnering over 4.1%.
'Connection' plot and cast propel the series to success
Meanwhile, Connection quickly became the most-watched miniseries on Saturday nights with an average nationwide rating of 6.1% according to Nielsen Korea. Connection stars Ji Sung, Jeon Mi-do, Kwon Yul, and Kim Kyung-nam. The series follows a top detective with a mysterious past who teams up with a reporter to solve the death of a mutual friend. This compelling narrative has helped the show quickly rise in popularity.
Other K-dramas struggle amid 'Connection's success
In other K-drama news, tvN's The Midnight Romance in Hagwon failed to impress despite its star-studded cast and controversies over some "inappropriate" scenes. Starring Jung Ryeo-won and Wi Ha-joon, the show scored an average nationwide rating of 4.2% for its fifth episode, which aired on Saturday. On the other hand, KBS 2TV's Beauty and Mr. Romantic remained the most-watched with a rating of 15.26%. The show is headlined by Im Soo-hyang and Ji Hyun-woo.
