Netflix orders 'Happy Gilmore 2' with Adam Sandler
Netflix has officially ordered a sequel to the 1996 hit comedy, Happy Gilmore, featuring Adam Sandler reprising his role as the lead character. The announcement was made during Netflix's upfront presentation to advertisers on Wednesday. The original film, co-written by Sandler and Tim Herlihy, followed a former ice hockey player who uses his anger to win professional golf tournaments.
Sandler hinted at 'Happy Gilmore 2' development earlier
Sandler had previously hinted at the sequel's development during an appearance on the Dan Patrick Show. He stated, "Dude, we've been talking about a Happy 2 and we're working on some stuff... But don't tell anybody." The news was also teased by Drew Barrymore on her talk show when she announced, "I'll just say this, from my source, that (Happy Gilmore 2) is in process."
Christopher McDonald may reprise role in sequel
Christopher McDonald, who portrayed Shooter McGavin in the original film, teased his character's return in the sequel. During a radio interview, McDonald shared a conversation with Sandler saying, "I saw Adam about two weeks ago, and he says to me, 'McDonald, you're gonna love this.'" He added that Sandler showed him the first draft of Happy Gilmore 2.
'Happy Gilmore' sequel part of Sandler's Netflix deal
The sequel to Happy Gilmore is expected to be part of Sandler's $250M deal with Netflix. Under this agreement, the actor-comedian has already produced eight projects for the streaming service. The original film grossed nearly $40M at the worldwide box office in 1996, helping establish Sandler as a leading comedy star of that decade.
