'Sickening': Naseeruddin Shah criticizes Bollywood's 'hyper-masculinity' trend
What's the story
Veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah recently condemned the growing trend in Hindi cinema that glorifies "hyper-masculinity" and "degrades women."
He spoke about it during a conversation with actor Parvathy at the Kerala Literature Festival.
When Parvathy spoke about "insecure hyper-masculinity" in commercial films, Shah called the success of such movies "sickening."
Society's reflection
'I think the films which feed into the secret fantasies...'
Shah further questioned if these films' success was a reflection of our society or its fantasies.
He elaborated, "I think the films which feed into the secret fantasies of men, who in their heart of hearts, look down on women, these are being fed."
"It's actually very scary to see how much approval such films get from the common viewer... it does explain the horrendous things that happen to women in a lot of places in our country."
Career choices
Shah's admission about choosing roles for financial reasons
In the same conversation, Shah also admitted to taking up some films only for the money.
"I have also done some movies which I did only for the money, that's the simple truth," he said.
However, he regretted those decisions but found comfort in the fact that people remember an actor's good work, not their mistakes.
