'Mrs.': How female-majority crew shaped Sanya Malhotra's film
What's the story
Arati Kadav, the director of the upcoming film Mrs., chose a female-led crew for the feminist drama.
The movie, an official adaptation of the Malayalam hit The Great Indian Kitchen (2021), delves into gender dynamics through its narrative.
In a recent interview with Mid-Day, Kadav shared how having a majority-female team impacted the storytelling and emotional depth of Mrs.
The film, starring Sanya Malhotra, premieres on ZEE5 on February 7.
Director's insight
'Every member of the crew brought their lived experiences...'
Reportedly, more than 50% of the crew was female.
Kadav shared, "Having a female-led team was empowering. Every member of the crew brought their lived experiences to the table, which enriched the storytelling."
"It was about creating a space where everyone felt seen and valued. This synergy is reflected in the emotional depth of Mrs."
Influence acknowledged
Crew's personal experiences influenced 'Mrs.'
Kadav also credited her crew's personal experiences.
"When you're telling a story like Mrs., which explores gender dynamics in a way that isn't loud or overt, you need people who understand those subtleties," she said.
"So many of my crew members shared their own experiences and perspectives, and those conversations found their way into the film—whether in a scene's framing, a moment of silence that spoke volumes, or even a costume choice."
