'Mrs.' director Arati Kadav's next is a sci-fi film
What's the story
Acclaimed director Arati Kadav, who recently made waves with Mrs., has announced her next venture.
In a departure from the drama genre of Mrs., Kadav will be delving into science fiction for her next project. However, despite the shift, she insists that the lessons learned from Mrs. will play a major role in this new endeavor.
"I'm making a science fiction story," she revealed to Mid-Day.
Genre fusion
Kadav to infuse human drama into sci-fi narrative
Kadav intends to add a touch of human drama to her next sci-fi film.
She said, "I learned so much about human emotions in Mrs. I will take that into the science fiction film."
"It will have a lot of human drama because that has to be at the center of my stories... So, it will be a heartfelt sci-fi story, a character drama with a bit of magic."
Audience feedback
'Mrs.' criticism and Kadav's response
Meanwhile, Mrs., an adaptation of the Malayalam film The Great Indian Kitchen (2021), has been widely praised. However, some viewers have criticized its repetition of iconic scenes from the original movie.
Responding to this critique, Kadav said, "I was not at all in favor of showing the scene flow of a remake...I added the character of Vedprakash because I figured being a doctor family, they would have domestic help."
Film defense
Kadav defended 'Mrs.'s simplicity and accessibility
Defending the simplicity of Mrs., Kadav attributed it to producer Harman Baweja's vision.
She explained, "Harman told me that this film works because of its simple and powerful storytelling, and if we try to make it complicated, its simplicity will be lost."
"He intended to make Mrs. for the audience who hasn't seen the original... The idea was not to make the film for only cinema-literate people, but to make it more accessible to north Indian viewers."
