Is Kangana Ranaut's 'Emergency' certified? MP High Court seeks answers
The Madhya Pradesh High Court has sought a response from the Centre regarding the certification status of Kangana Ranaut's upcoming film Emergency. The movie, which was originally slated for release on Friday (September 6), has been postponed after the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) reportedly revoked its certificate following multiple petitions. The court's query comes in response to a PIL alleging that the film portrays the Sikh community negatively.
MP HC's query on 'Emergency' certification
According to Bar and Bench, the MP HC asked the Centre to clarify whether Ranaut's film has received certification. The Court noted the Centre's recent submission to the Punjab and Haryana High Court indicating that the film had not yet received certification. Justice Sachdeva remarked, "In light of the order from the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the Board is reviewing the film. If any scenes require editing or deletion, it's possible the film might not release on the 6th."
CBFC's response to plea seeking revocation of screening certificate
In response to a plea seeking the revocation of Emergency's screening certificate, the CBFC informed the Punjab and Haryana High Court that the film has not yet been cleared for public viewing. "The certification of the movie is under consideration. It has not been granted as of now. It will be granted as per rules and regulations, as applicable in this case," said Additional Solicitor General of India Satya Pal Jain, who represented the CBFC in court.
Ranaut expresses disappointment over film's release delay
Ranaut recently appeared on Shubhankar Mishra's podcast, where she expressed her disappointment over the delay in Emergency's release. She described India as a "hopeless nation" and said, "Meri film pe hi Emergency lag gayi hai. Main toh khair bahut hi zyada disappointed hu apne desh se, aur jo bhi haalaat hain (An Emergency has been imposed on my film too. It's a very hopeless state. I'm quite disappointed by our country and whatever the circumstances are)."
'Emergency' faces potential ban in Telangana
Emergency—a biographical political drama based on the 21-month period from 1975 to 1977 when former PM Indira Gandhi declared a state of emergency across India—is facing calls for a ban. A delegation of 18 members from the Telangana Sikh Society has accused the film of portraying their community as terrorists and anti-nationals. Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has assured Sikh community leaders that the state government would consider banning the film's release pending legal consultation.
