'Money Heist' creator extends Netflix deal, to create pandemic-themed show
Money Heist is one of the most profitable and well-known shows from the roster of Netflix. And, the streaming giant is not letting go of the creative forces behind it. According to a new report, Money Heist creator Alex Pina has extended his exclusive deal with Netflix, thereby promising us more high-quality content. This will include a COVID-19 pandemic-themed show as well.
Why does this story matter?
The first two seasons of Money Heist aired on a Spanish network. However, it became an international sensation after Netflix took over the production in its third season. Narrating a tale of a group of bank robbers and the Professor, the five-season phenomenon remains one of the most-watched shows on the platform. A Korean version of the same is also coming to Netflix.
Pina is also working on 'Berlin'
Pina will create a high-concept series based in the backdrop of the pandemic alongside completing the Money Heist spin-off series, Berlin, reported The Hollywood Reporter. "After the great adventure that has been Money Heist, we are very excited to remain a home for him," Netflix's VP content for Spain and Portugal, Diego Avalos, told the publication. Meanwhile, Pina also expressed his excitement over the association.
Here's the storyline for pandemic-based show
Talking about the recently greenlit pandemic-based show, Pina said this series will follow the lives of Spain's top elites as they live in luxurious underground bunkers to evade the havoc on the surface. As per the producer/writer, he got the idea from a newspaper article from 2021 that mentioned how rich Spaniards were purchasing bunkers amid the spread of the coronavirus.
Know more about the deal
In 2018, Netflix had signed an overall deal with Pina and his production firm Vancouver Media. Overall deals are signed between an artist/their company and a studio—where the latter funds the artist's ideas and then owns these ideas. Netflix has similar deals with Stranger Things' Matt and Ross Duffer and Shawn Levy and Orange Is the New Black's Jenji Kohan. (Source: The Hollywood Reporter)
