Amid MeToo wave, Mollywood to get new film association
What's the story
As the Malayalam film industry grapples with the fallout from the eye-opening Justice K Hema Committee report, a group of industry figures are preparing to launch a new film organization.
The Progressive Filmmakers's Association aims to breathe new life into the sector and foster a fair and equitable working environment, reported PTI.
A vision note for this proposed association has been shared among industry members.
Details
Vision note signed by prominent industry figures
The vision note, which has been accessed by the media, is reportedly signed by renowned filmmakers Anjali Menon, Lijo Jose Pellissery, Rajeev Ravi, and Aashiq Abu.
Actor Rima Kallingal and producer Bineesh Chandra have also signed the document.
The note highlights that despite the Malayalam film industry's substantial impact on Kerala's economy and culture, it is still bound by antiquated systems and practices.
Note
'Unsystematic, fragmented environment' in Malayalam film industry
The vision note states, "As filmmakers-producers, directors, technicians-we are the foundation upon which this industry stands: creating jobs, driving innovation, and fostering creativity. Yet, we often find ourselves navigating an unsystematic, fragmented environment, far removed from the progressive standards of modern industries."
Association objectives
Association to prioritize ethical responsibility, systemic modernization
The vision note calls on industry members to join the Progressive Filmmakers's Association, promising that the group will usher in a new era for Malayalam cinema.
The association will be founded on the principles of "ethical responsibility, systemic modernization, and empowerment of the workforce, creating a workplace that is fair, just, and reflective of the values we hold as a society."
Statement
'Together, we can renovate the Malayalam film industry'
"Together, we can renovate the Malayalam film industry, positioning it as a leader in both creative excellence and industry standards."
"This is not just a vision for us as filmmakers, but a vision for a better, more equitable future for everyone involved in cinema. Let us move forward, together," the note added.
Recent developments
New film association follows recent industry controversies
The move to establish a new film association follows recent disagreements within existing organizations like the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists and the Film Employees Federation of Kerala.
These disputes arose over the groups' responses to the revelations in the Justice Hema Committee report, which exposed instances of harassment and exploitation in the Malayalam movie industry.
