
'L2: Empuraan' smashes records with ₹22 crore opening day collection
What's the story
The much-hyped film L2: Empuraan, starring Mohanlal and Prithviraj Sukumaran, has broken box office records on its first day.
It earned a whopping ₹22 crore in India alone, marking the biggest opening for a Malayalam film ever.
This is more than double the previous record of any Malayalam film.
It had 60% occupancy in Malayalam screenings, with places like Kochi and Kozhikode seeing over 90% footfalls.
The film is directed by Sukumaran.

Language-wise collection breakdown of 'L2: Empuraan'
Notably, the film's earnings were mainly from the Malayalam version, which grossed ₹19.45 crore. The Telugu version also did well, adding ₹1.2 crore to the total collection.
However, the dubbed versions in Hindi, Tamil, and Kannada underperformed, collectively adding only a meager ₹1.35 crore to the total collection.
Nonetheless, L2: Empuraan is poised to further break several records for the Malayalam film industry.

'L2: Empuraan' achieves worldwide gross collection of ₹65+ crore
Film trade analyst AB George reported that L2: Empuraan raked in ₹65+ crore in worldwide gross collection on its first day.
This is more than the 4-day weekend worldwide gross of Sukumaran's last film, The Goat Life's ₹64.14 crore.

L2: Empuraan serves as the second installment in the planned Lucifer trilogy after the massive success of Lucifer (2019).
The movie explores a gripping socio-political drama with Mohanlal's character at the center.
