Mohanlal surveys landslide damage in Wayanad, donates ₹3cr for rehabilitation
Malayalam actor and Lieutenant Colonel in the Indian Territorial Army, Mohanlal, visited the landslide-impacted region of Wayanad on Saturday. Donning his army uniform, he first arrived at the army camp at Meppadi before proceeding to the disaster-stricken areas. His tour included Chooralmala, Mundakkai, and Punchirimattom among other places to gauge the extent of damage.
Mohanlal interacts with rescue workers, praises efforts
During his visit, Mohanlal engaged with various rescue workers including the army and locals to comprehend the severity of the incident. "The magnitude of the landslide can only be comprehended by witnessing it first-hand," he stated. "The army, the navy, the air force, the NDRF, the Fire and Rescue, the other organisations, locals etc who all are part of the rescue operations have done a wonderful job."
Mohanlal pledges ₹3cr for rehabilitation, salutes officials
Mohanlal disclosed that his 122 infantry battalion (TA) of the Indian Army was among the first to reach the disaster-hit region. He pledged a donation of ₹3 crore for rehabilitation works through Vishwashanthi Foundation, an organization he is associated with. In addition to this contribution, he had previously donated ₹25 lakh to the Chief Minister's Distress Relief Fund (CMDRF). The actor added, "More funds will be made available if needed."
Kerala government requests radars, death toll rises
The Kerala government has requested deep search radars from the Centre to aid in rescue operations. One Xaver radar from Northern Command and four Reeco radars from Tiranga Mountain Rescue Organisation were airlifted to Wayanad on Saturday. The death toll from the landslides has reached 358, with over 200 people still missing. Mohanlal's visit was aimed at offering solace to the victims and assessing the damage firsthand.
Malayalam film industry shows solidarity with victims
Other celebrities from the Malayalam film industry have also shown solidarity with the affected communities. Superstar Mammootty and his son, actor Dulquer Salmaan, jointly donated ₹35 lakh to the Chief Minister's Distress Relief Fund (CMDRF). In addition, director Vignesh and his wife-actor Nayanthara, actor Rashmika Mandanna, actor couple Suriya, Jyotika; and Suriya's brother-actor Karthi have also generously donated.
