'Moana 2' trailer unveiled: Auli'i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson return
At long last! On Wednesday, Disney unveiled the first trailer for Moana 2, the much-awaited sequel to its 2016 animated blockbuster, Moana. The trailer confirms that Auli'i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson are reprising their voice roles as Moana and Maui, respectively. It teases another sea adventure for Moana, who is called upon by her ancestors to "sail to new skies and reconnect our people across the entire ocean."
Stunning animation and familiar faces in 'Moana 2' trailer
The trailer showcases breathtaking water animation, including a captivating scene of Moana floating in front of a whale shark. It also features the return of Moana's rooster Heihei and pig Pua. Notably, Pua will accompany Moana on this new journey, addressing fans' queries about why the pet was left behind in the first film despite its prominent presence on the poster. The film is directed by David G Derrick Jr and was originally planned as a Disney+ original streaming series.

'Moana 2' plot and live-action remake
IMDb describes the plot as, "After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana journeys to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she has ever faced." In addition to the animated sequel, Disney also has plans for a separate live-action remake of Moana, announced in 2023 before the animated sequel was known to be in development. It stars Johnson and will be released in 2026.
'Moana 2' set for Thanksgiving release
The sequel, set three years after the original film, is described by Disney as an "expansive new voyage" featuring Moana, Maui, and a "brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers." Temuera Morrison, Nicole Scherzinger, and Alan Tudyk are also a part of the voice cast. The film will hit American theaters on November 27, coinciding with the Thanksgiving weekend.
