Miss South Africa Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters crowned Miss Universe
Miss South Africa Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters, 22, has been crowned Miss Universe 2017. Nel-Peters, a business management graduate, beat out 91 other candidates to win the pageant, held in Las Vegas, USA. The first runner-up was Miss Colombia Laura Gonzlez and second runner-up, Miss Jamaica Davina Bennett. Miss India Shraddha Shashidhar failed to make it to the top 10.

The participants competed in a variety of categories, including swimsuit, evening gown, and a question-and-answer rounds. Contestants from the USA, Venezuela, Philippines, Canada, South Africa, Spain, Brazil, Colombia, Thailand, and Jamaica made it to the top-10. Contestants from South Africa, Venezuela, Thailand, Jamaica, and Colombia made it to the top-5. They were asked questions ranging from sexual harassment to the impact of social media.
Nel-Peters considers her confidence her best quality
The top-3 contestants were asked about the quality they are most proud of. Nel-Peters said she considered her confidence her best quality. She said that Miss Universe "is a woman that's overcome many fears" and helped others do the same. As Miss Universe, Nel-Peters has earned a year-long salary and a luxury apartment in New York City (for a year), among other prizes.
