DU's Miranda House takes legal action over 'Ziddi Girls' trailer
What's the story
Reportedly, the authorities of Delhi University's Miranda House have filed a lawsuit against the creators of the web series Ziddi Girls.
The move comes after a controversial trailer allegedly depicted the college in a derogatory manner.
The contentious line from the trailer read, "Aaj MH mein padhai nahi, porn chalta hai," triggering widespread condemnation from college officials, students, and graduates alike.
Legal action
College authorities filed a police complaint, issued a legal notice
The college authorities have lodged a police complaint and issued a legal notice to the creators of Ziddi Girls, according to TOI.
The Amazon Prime Video series, which takes place in a Delhi college called Matilda House (MH), is a story of five students on a journey of self-discovery.
This usage of the initials MH has been flagged as problematic as it is commonly associated with Miranda House, a premier women's college.
Ongoing dispute
Despite disclaimer, college authorities demand removal of 1st trailer
In a bid to quell the controversy, the makers released a second trailer featuring a disclaimer stressing the series' fictional nature.
However, this hasn't appeased the college authorities who are demanding the removal of the first trailer and have sought a priority preview of the series ahead of its launch.
The college expressed its shock and outrage in a statement, especially since parts of Ziddi Girls were filmed within their premises.
Student unions' objections
'Tarnishes, defames, and demeans the 77-year-old legacy...'
The Miranda House Students's Union and the Delhi University Students Union have also raised their concerns.
They claim the show's content "tarnishes, defames, and demeans the 77-year-old legacy of Miranda House."
Despite co-director Shonali Bose assuring that there is "nothing regressive" in Ziddi Girls, students and alumni continue to be upset over its depiction of their college.
