Acclaimed director Mike Flanagan in negotiations for new 'Exorcist' film
Horror genre specialist Mike Flanagan, known for his work on Doctor Sleep and Hush, is reportedly in talks to direct the upcoming Exorcist film. This information has been confirmed by sources close to Deadline. Universal Pictures and Blumhouse, the studios behind the project, have yet to comment on these negotiations. If finalized, Flanagan will take over from David Gordon Green who left the rebooted franchise earlier this year.
Universal and Blumhouse acquired 'Exorcist' rights for $400M
In July 2021, Universal Pictures and Blumhouse acquired the rights to The Exorcist franchise from Morgan Creek for a whopping $400M. At the time of acquisition, there were plans to produce at least three new films under this franchise. However, it remains uncertain whether Flanagan will be involved in more than one of these projects. The first film of the trilogy, The Exorcist: Believer, did not meet box office expectations.
'Exorcist: Believer' fell short, sequel stands postponed
The Exorcist: Believer, the first film in the supposed trilogy, debuted with a modest $26.4M domestically (US) last October. It subsequently grossed $65.5M in the US/Canada circuit and $136.2M globally, failing to mark its presence at the box office. The sequel, The Exorcist: Deceiver, was initially set for release on April 18, 2025, but was postponed when Green left the project. Lionsgate's Michael Jackson biopic replaced its slot in the release schedule.
