MeToo: Malayalam actor Sajitha was asked to 'adjust' for role
As the #MeToo movement rages on in the Malayalam film industry, another actor has spoken up about her experiences. Malayalam actor Sajitha Madathil, known for movies like Shutter and King of Kotha, has revealed that she was asked to "compromise" to get a role in a film. The incident took place when she was at the peak of her career, Madathil said. She added that she was shocked when she heard the proposition.
'Would you be ready for adjustments if need be?'
Madathil told News18 that an associate of a Tamil director had called her. He asked her, "Would you be ready for adjustments if need be? I am sure you understand what I mean by that." "I was shocked when he said that. I did not expect anybody to approach me in that manner. The way he said it was loaded with meaning. It was as if I wouldn't get the role if I didn't agree to 'adjustments.'"
Madathil posted about the incident on social media
Madathil then posted about the incident on social media, including the man's mobile number. "I mentioned the role and asked my friends if they would be interested in it. I also said that there was a minor glitch- there might be a demand to make 'adjustments' if they wanted the role," she said. Madathil added, "Soon enough, I got a call from him apologizing. He asked me to remove the post, but I stood my ground."
Madathil also spoke about the recent #MeToo developments
Madathil also spoke about the recent #MeToo developments, including the Hema Commission report and the special investigation team probing the matter. She said that it's time to bring about systemic change in the industry, which would pave the path for better leadership and give women more responsible roles. Reacting to the resignations of the members of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), led by Mohanlal, she said, "Was it the fear that they would be forced to resign?"
