Amid backlash, 'Mental Hai Kya' gets a new title
Courtesy a much-awaited re-union of Queen co-stars Kangana Ranaut and Rajkummar Rao, quirky posters, and major controversy around its title, Mental Hai Kya has been in the news for a while. And now, following backlash from various sections, the makers have decided to change the film's title to a more generic one, Judgementall Hai Kya. Here are the details.
CBFC has given the film U/A certification, suggested minor changes
Confirming the said change, a spokesperson for the Balaji Motion Pictures, said, "Given the sensitivity attached to the issue of mental-health and the fact that our intention is not to offend or hurt anyone's sentiments, the makers have decided to change the title to Judgementall Hai Kya." They further said that the CBFC has granted the film a U/A certification and suggested minor changes.
In April, Indian Psychiatric Society demanded removal of "degrading" title
Earlier in April, the the Indian Psychiatric Society (IPS) had issued a letter to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), demanding the removal/change of film title, terming it to be "discriminative, stigmatising, degrading and inhuman in projecting mental disorders and persons who suffer from mental disorders." They also filed a PIL over the matter at the Gujarat High Court.
The makers soon came to the film's defense
In response to the allegations from the IPS, the makers of the film said that the film is "a fictional thriller genre feature film meant to entertain audiences and it does not offend, discriminate or disregard any person."
And now, 'Judgementall Hai Kya' will release on July 26
Written by Kanika Dhillon (Manmarziyaan, Kedarnath) and directed by national award-winning filmmaker Prakash Kovelamudi, Judgementall Hai Kya is a dark comedy film, revolving around the lives of two neighbors, perpetually trying to one-up each other.
