Lyricists, composers gain equal 'co-author rights' in historic deal
What's the story
In a major development for India's entertainment industry, the Music Composers Association of India (MCAI) and Screenwriters Association (SWA) have signed a landmark partnership, reported Variety.
The agreement, which comes after long negotiations, recognizes composers and lyricists as "equal co-authors" in the creation of a song.
It also makes them "primary artists" for credit allocation and mandates separate contracts with producers.

Filmmaker-composer and MCAI president Vishal Bhardwaj hailed the agreement as a "promise to ensure fair credit, respect, and independence for all who contribute to the magic of music."
He called it "more than an agreement; it's a promise to ensure fair credit, respect, and independence for all who contribute to the magic of music."
SWA general secretary Zama Habib also echoed these sentiments, calling the MoU a "declaration" that lyricists and music directors are united as "co-artists."
