No, Maya Rudolph won't play Kamala Harris on 'SNL'
Maya Rudolph, who has previously portrayed US Vice President Kamala Harris on Saturday Night Live, recently revealed that she has not been approached to reprise the iconic role for the upcoming season. The 52-year-old actor addressed the matter on Jimmy Kimmel Live! where she was interviewed by guest host RuPaul. The news comes as a surprise since it was reported last month that Rudolph would be returning to the show to play Harris, who is now the Democratic presidential nominee.
'No one has asked me,' says Rudolph
During the interview, RuPaul asked Rudolph, "Will we be seeing Kamala on SNL anytime soon?" To this, the comedian responded with a laugh, "Interesting that you brought this up, because no one has asked me." Rudolph first portrayed Harris on SNL in a September 2019 episode hosted by Woody Harrelson. She continued to play the role throughout the 2020 presidential race and even won an Emmy for her performance.
Rudolph expresses excitement and surprise over role
Rudolph added, "I've never experienced something like this in any of the work I've done. This has been such a tremendous, exciting time for me that feels so much bigger than me or anything I've ever done." "I've played her on the show before, but the minute it was announced that she was running, I think I was home watching The Bear and it was announced that I'd confirmed doing SNL. I was like, 'I did what?'"
Rudolph's career post 'SNL'
Rudolph was a cast member on SNL from 2000 to 2007. Since her departure, she has starred in several films and TV shows, including the hit comedy Bridesmaids and the Apple TV+ series Loot. Despite leaving the show, Rudolph has made numerous guest appearances on SNL over the years. The upcoming 50th season of the show is set to premiere on September 28 on NBC.
'SNL' return uncertain, says Rudolph
When asked about her return to SNL, Rudolph remained non-committal. "I mean, I don't know. We'll see!" she said. Despite the uncertainty, fans of the show are eagerly awaiting the possibility of seeing her reprise her role as Harris in the upcoming season.
