Amazon MGM, Mattel set 'Masters of the Universe' for 2026
Amazon MGM Studios, in partnership with Mattel Films, has announced the release date for the highly anticipated live-action reboot of Masters of the Universe. Slated to premiere on June 5, 2026, the film is directed by Travis Knight, known for his work on Bumblebee. The screenplay is penned by Chris Butler, based on an initial draft by David Callaham and Aaron and Adam Nee.
'Masters of the Universe' plot: Journey of He-Man
The film's narrative centers on a 10-year-old Prince Adam who, after a spaceship crash, finds himself stranded on Earth, separated from his magical Power Sword. Nearly two decades later, upon rediscovering his lost sword, he embarks on a space journey to protect his home planet Eternia from the evil Skeletor. Before defeating this formidable enemy, Prince Adam must uncover the secrets of his past and transform into He-Man.
'Masters of the Universe': A journey from toys to film
Masters of the Universe first appeared in 1982 as a line of action figures by Mattel. It was adapted into an animated series, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe in 1983, becoming one of the first children's programs to be syndicated on television. The franchise has since expanded to include toys, TV shows, a Netflix animated series, and video games. The reboot has been in development for some time, initially at Sony then Netflix before landing at Amazon MGM.
