'Maidaan' struggles at box office despite positive reviews
Maidaan, the sports biopic about Indian football coach Syed Abdul Rahim, has been underperforming at the box office since its release. Despite favorable reviews, the Ajay Devgn-starrer had a disappointing opening on Eid, earning only ₹2.6 crore on its first day. By Tuesday, the sixth day of screening, revenues had fallen to approximately ₹1.65 crore according to Sacnilk's report.
Weekend spike failed to sustain box office run
The film saw a slight improvement in its box office performance over the weekend, recording revenues of ₹5.75 crore on Saturday and ₹6.4 crore on Sunday. However, this upward trend was short-lived as Monday's collections plummeted to a mere ₹1.5 crore, marking a drastic 75% drop from its weekend earnings. This brings the total net collection to just ₹25.15 crore.
Lowered ticket prices could not boost performance, either
In an attempt to stimulate ticket sales, the producers reduced ticket prices to ₹150 in selected theaters. However, this strategy did not significantly improve the film's performance. On its sixth day, the film only managed an overall occupancy rate of just over 11%, indicating that the price reduction did not attract a larger audience.
It faced box office competition and production challenges
Produced on a budget of over ₹100 crore, the film faced extensive delays due to pandemic-related issues and post-production work. The film, directed by Amit Sharma, also had to contend with stiff competition at the box office from Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff's Bade Miyan Chote Miyan. Both films were expected to perform well but have instead turned out to be two of the year's biggest box office disappointments.
