Directed by Mahesh Bhatt and written by Shobha De, Swabhimaan remains one of the pioneers in urban family television dramas till date. And after over 25 years, the Rohit Roy, Manoj Bajpayee, and Ashutosh Rana-starrer is making a return on the small screens! The Doordarshan show that enjoyed impressive TRP numbers during its original run will now be accessible on a paid channel.
It's the first Indian serial to complete 500 episodes
To recall, apart from the Speedpost writer, the show was also penned by Vinod Ranganath (the screenwriter of Shahid Kapoor's debut vehicle, Ishq Vishk). Notably, Swabhimaan was the first Indian serial to complete 500 episodes. Airing from 1995, it had a total of 800 episodes. The main cast also had Kitu Gidwani, Anju Mahendru, Achint Kaur, Tanaaz Currim, Rajeev Paul, and Deepak Parashar.
At the center: A young widow of a rich tycoon
For the unversed, Swabhimaan stood apart from the rest because of its attractive and relatable storyline. At the center, we had Svetlana Bannerjee (Gidwani), who was the young widow of a rich tycoon. Grappling with grief, she simultaneously had to deal with greed, betrayal, and subdued tussle as several parties flocked over to gain a part of the inheritance. Swabhimaan aired till 1997.
To note, 'Swabhimaan' was Rohit Bose Roy's debut project
The serial paved the way for Bajpayee and Rana's film careers. It also launched Roy, who recently shared, "The audience have seen and appreciated me in several roles and characters, but every actor has a special show and character in his lifetime that changes his life forever and for me that was the character of Rishabh Malhotra in the show Swabhimaan (sic)."
Watch the show exclusively on Tata Sky Seniors
Roy has repeatedly spoken about the influence Swabhimaan had in his career. In a past interview, he had recalled how he was rejected multiple times in the past. His fortune changed when Bhatt saw something in him. "I got that show without any schooling in acting," said the Shootout at Lokhandwala star. Meanwhile, interested viewers can catch the show exclusively on Tata Sky Seniors.
