'The Roundup: Punishment' sets new record in Korean cinema
Ma Dong-seok's latest film, The Roundup: Punishment, part of the popular The Outlaws series, has made a significant impact at the South Korean box office. Since its premiere on April 24, it has consistently held the No. 1 spot for nine days. The Korean Film Council announced on Friday that the film had officially amassed over 6M viewers by Thursday, May 2, setting a new record in Korean cinema for 2024.
'The Roundup: Punishment' surpassed horror hit 'Exhuma's record
The action thriller has surpassed the previous record set by the supernatural thriller Exhuma, which took 11 days to reach the same viewer count. This achievement makes Ma's film the fastest Korean movie of 2024 to attract 6M viewers. The fourth installment in the beloved series follows detective Ma Seok-do (Ma) and his team as they dismantle an illegal online gambling ring, further enhancing its appeal.
Ma's action thriller already broke these records
Before this, The Roundup: Punishment had become 2024's fastest film to attract over 2M viewers, having achieved this feat within four days of its release. There were never any doubts about the film's performance though as on its debut day, the film broke domestic presale records with over 834K tickets sold. The series began with The Outlaws in 2017, followed by The Roundup in 2022 and The Roundup: No Way Out in 2023.
