Cannes 2024: Lily Gladstone, Eva Green, more join jury
The Cannes Film Festival has unveiled the eight distinguished individuals who will join Greta Gerwig—the previously announced president—on the main Competition jury for its 77th edition. They are Turkish screenwriter and photographer Ebru Ceylan, Hollywood actors Lily Gladstone and Eva Green, Lebanese director Nadine Labaki, Spanish director JA Bayona, Italian actor Pierfrancisco Favino, Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda, and French actor Omar Sy. The festival is scheduled to take place from May 14 to 25.
Why does this story matter?
These jurors will preside over the Palme d'Or and other significant awards at the film festival. Cannes juries have a proven history of choosing standout contenders for award seasons. Last year's Palme winner, Justine Triet's Anatomy of a Fall, progressed from success at Cannes to the Oscars. The French film clinched the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and received a Best Actress nomination for emerging talent Sandra Hüller.
In detail: Know more about the accomplished jurors
Ceylan is known for her creative collaborations with her husband Nuri Bilge Ceylan. Their joint ventures include the 2014 Palme d'Or winner Winter Sleep. Meanwhile, Gladstone recently made history as the first Native American to receive an Oscar nomination for Best Actor for her role in Killers of the Flower Moon. French actor Eva Green transitioned from theatre to cinema with Bernardo Bertolucci's Innocents: The Dreamers. She has worked with Ridley Scott in the Kingdom of Heaven.
Achievements: Labaki's association with Cannes; Bayona won 12 Goyas
Lebanese director and screenwriter Labaki clinched the Cannes Jury Prize in 2018 for Capernaum. Her association with Cannes began in 2004 when she participated in its La Résidence de la Cinéfondation program. Additionally, Spanish director Bayona made his debut with The Orphanage, which premiered in Cannes Critics' Week in 2007. His film The Impossible bagged five Goya Awards, including Best Director. His most recent film, Society of the Snow, won 12 Goya Awards.
Meanwhile, these eagerly-awaited films to vie for Palme d'Or
This year's Palme d'Or contenders include the eagerly awaited film, Francis Ford Coppola's long-delayed Megalopolis. Moreover, Yorgos Lanthimos's next after Poor Things, Kinds of Kindness, is another major contender. Andrea Arnold's Bird, David Cronenberg's The Shrouds, and Ali Abbasi's drama The Apprentice—which focuses on former US president Donald Trump—are other contenders. The winner will be announced at the festival's closing ceremony on May 25.
