Lavani queen Yamunabai Waikar passes away at 103
Acclaimed Lavani singer Yamunabai Waikar, who mushroomed the popular folk song form to other parts of the country, passed away at 103 on Tuesday at Satara district (Mumbai). She was admitted to hospital on Monday with the complaint of uneasiness. Waikar was honored with Padma Shri in 2012. She worked to create awareness about water conservation during the 1972 drought in Maharashtra. Here's more.
A brief background about Yamunabai Waikar
Born into a poor family in Satara district, Yamuna Vikram Jawale learned singing and started performing along with her sisters at a young age. Soon offers to act in the "Tamasha" theatre followed, and she became famous as Yamunabai "Waikar" across Maharashtra.
