UAE censors gay scene from 'Khel Khel Mein'—Mudassar Aziz reacts
The United Arab Emirates's Media Regulatory Office has reportedly edited out crucial scenes from the Bollywood film Khel Khel Mein for its theatrical release. The censored portions include a significant sequence involving actor Fardeen Khan's character, whose storyline is centered around his sexual orientation. This move has left fans feeling let down and has sparked a response from the movie's director, Mudassar Aziz.
Fans express disappointment over censorship
Fans in the UAE have expressed their disappointment over the censorship of Khel Khel Mein, led by Akshay Kumar. A viewer from Dubai, who wished to remain anonymous, told Mid-Day, "This edit changes the narrative of Fardeen's character. It's disheartening to see such an important moment erased." "I felt cheated when I found out from Indian cine-goers about this." Another fan, Ahmed Al Mansoori, said he was looking forward to the film because of its progressive storyline.
Director Aziz responded to censorship
When asked about the censorship, director Aziz chose to focus on the positive impact of the film. He said, "I'm a filmmaker. To write all sorts of characters and raise topics of conversation is my professional and moral duty!" He added, "While it's heartbreaking to see that something so relevant...found its way out of the UAE release, I'm thrilled at the applause that [the rest] of the world is sending my way for those very scenes."
Khan stands by the message of acceptance
Meanwhile, Khan, who makes his comeback to the big screen with KKM after a 14-year hiatus, also commented on the censorship. He said, "Through this role, I hoped to contribute to a conversation that is necessary and relevant." Khan added, "While edits may have been made, the intention behind the role—that of acceptance—remains unchanged, and I stand by the message's importance." Released last Thursday, the film also stars Vaani Kapoor, Taapsee Pannu, Ammy Virk, Aditya Seal, and Pragya Jaiswal.
