After 'Horizon 1's debacle, will Kevin Costner direct 'Horizon 3'
Kevin Costner, the renowned Hollywood actor and director, has announced his intention to direct the third installment of the Horizon franchise. This revelation was made during his recent appearance at the Venice Film Festival. Despite the first film's negative reviews and lackluster performance at the box office, Costner remains committed to ensuring the success of this potential sequel.
Costner blamed Warner Bros. for 'Horizon's' underperformance
Costner attributed the poor reception of the first Horizon film to Warner Bros. Studios's inconsistent release schedule for the second part. He told the audience at Venice, "I think it probably was a reaction to the release of 1—it didn't have overwhelming success." "That was a studio decision to release it six weeks later, and it became a studio situation to not release it that quickly."
Costner's optimism for 'Horizon' franchise's future
Despite the initial setback, Costner remains optimistic about the Horizon franchise's future. Drawing from his extensive experience in the film industry, he expressed confidence that even films that initially underperform can eventually become classics. "I've had a lot of movies that way that have stood the test of time," he stated. The first Horizon film was released in June 2024 and reportedly grossed nearly $34 million, which was deemed below average.
Costner's determination to deliver 'Horizon 3'
Costner also shared his enthusiasm for directing Horizon 3, expressing a sense of urgency to deliver an engaging storyline. He stated, "I have to hurry and not let the rock fall back downhill. I've got to go put my hands on it again and start to push it up." "It's a rope that I cannot let go of. I don't know how I'm going to make 3 right now, but I'm going to make it."
Meanwhile, 'Horizon 2' is yet to be released
The first part starred Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Will Patton, Jamie Campbell Bower, and Giovanni Ribisi, among others. The film is set in the 1850s in the San Pedro Valley of Southeastern Territorial Arizona. Meanwhile, the release details for Horizon 2 are expected to be announced by the makers soon. The trilogy is Costner's passion project.
