Keanu Reeves in negotiations for Ruben Östlund's new airplane drama
Hollywood actor Keanu Reeves is reportedly in talks to headline The Entertainment System Is Down, an upcoming film by renowned Swedish director Ruben Östlund, reported Variety. The plot of the movie—billed as a social satire set on a long-haul flight where the entertainment system crashes down—remains largely undisclosed. Östlund has spent several years "collecting anecdotes and recently finalized the script." The film is being planned as a multistarrer.
Reeves's role and the film's ambition
Details about Reeves's character in the film are yet to be revealed, but it is expected that his role will embody the dark humor typical of Östlund's work. Per Variety, The Entertainment System Is Down is shaping up to be Östlund's most ambitious endeavor yet, surpassing even his 2022 Palme d'Or-winning film Triangle of Sadness, which made a lot of noise in the international film circuit. Philippe Bober's Coproduction Office is co-producing it and will handle its international sales.
Vision for the film and production details
In a previous interview with Variety, Östlund described the upcoming film as "a study of how human beings interact in this little laboratory that is a plane" and the movie "will look at how modern human beings are wrecked under these circumstances." He also expressed his aspirations for the film to incite the largest walkout in Cannes Film Festival history. The movie is being produced by Östlund and Erik Hemmendorff under their Plattform Produktion banner based in Goteborg, Sweden.
Reeves's upcoming project apart from 'TESID'
In addition to Östlund's film, Reeves's future projects include Ballerina, a spinoff of Lionsgate's hugely popular John Wick franchise, where he will share screen space with Ana de Armas. The trailer for Ballerina was unveiled at CinemaCon earlier this month. Other details such as locations, writers, and the rest of the case for The Entertainment System is Down can be expected in the coming months.
