Keanu Reeves cast as Shadow in 'Sonic the Hedgehog 3'
Keanu Reeves, renowned for his roles in John Wick, is confirmed to voice Shadow the Hedgehog in Paramount's upcoming film, Sonic the Hedgehog 3. This news comes shortly after Paramount showcased scenes from the movie at the recently-concluded CinemaCon. To recall, Shadow was introduced in the 2001 game Sonic Adventure 2.
Understand the origin of anthropomorphic black hedgehog: Shadow
Shadow the Hedgehog—first introduced in Sonic Adventure 2—has evolved into a beloved antihero among fans. Within Sonic's fictional universe, Shadow is an anthropomorphic black hedgehog created by Professor Gerald Robotnik, the grandfather of the series' antagonist, Doctor Eggman aka Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey). Following the traumatic loss of his best friend Maria Robotnik, Shadow initially embarks on a quest for revenge. However, he later resolves to honor Maria's memory by fulfilling her wish to safeguard the world from harm.
'Sonic 3's live-action cast and directorial team
The live-action cast of Sonic 3 includes Carrey, James Marsden as Tom Wachowski, and Tika Sumpter as Maddie Wachowski, among others. Apart from Reeves and Carrey, the film also marks the return of Ben Schwartz as Sonic, Colleen O'Shaughnessey as Tails, and Idris Elba as Knuckles. Jeff Fowler will continue his directorial role for the third installment after successfully directing the first two films.
'Sonic' franchise's success and future plans
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is scheduled for a December 20, 2024 release in the US. The Sonic franchise has been a profitable venture for Paramount, with the first two films—Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022)—grossing a combined $725.2M worldwide. In addition to the third film, a spin-off series titled Knuckles is currently in development and slated to premiere on Paramount+.
Meanwhile, a quick look at Reeves's upcoming ventures
Sonic 3 is one of several forthcoming films featuring Reeves, including the John Wick spinoff Ballerina and comedies Good Fortune and Outcome. Meanwhile, following the resounding success of John Wick: Chapter 4, John Wick 5 has been confirmed. It remains uncertain whether Reeves will return to the franchise. However, considering John Wick's integral role as the face and namesake of the franchise, it seems unlikely that Lionsgate would proceed with a John Wick film without Reeves's involvement.
