On #MeToo, KJo talks about consent, but nothing on 'named-harassers'
What's the story
It's been over a month since #MeToo took over Bollywood and brought industry's big shots under the scanner.
While several celebs have been brimming with opinions about the burning issue, ace filmmaker Karan Johar was criticized for his deafening silence.
But finally, KJo broke his long kept silence. Notably, he spoke about consent but didn't say anything on named harassers.
Taking the safe road?
KJo's Statement
People are forgetting the basics: Karan
During his radio show, KJo spoke about the matter and said that it was a basic thing to ask for consent. However, people forgot it these days, he claimed.
"It's important for people to understand both the verbal as well as the non-verbal communication they get from someone they're with. These are the basics; basics that we often tend to forget," he stated.
Digital Harassment
KJo also spoke about digital harassment
KJo then went on to say it wasn't 'cool' to send obscene pictures, as it's actually harassment.
"Persisting with flirtatious texts, even after someone has explicitly expressed discomfort, is definitely not cool! You must respect the boundaries that others set for you, and that's precisely what you ask for consent, and always respect the answer," he added.
Thank you for breaking it down, Karan.
Disappointment
While thoughts on #MeToo are appreciated, he didn't actually speak
We appreciate what KJo said. Maybe now people can understand consent. But we are disappointed.
After weeks, he addressed the issue but didn't say a word on power abuse in the industry.
We get that he was hosting a radio show and that question wasn't asked. But there are other channels to talk, right? We need more than that from someone who heads Dharma.
