KJo acquires rights to Malayalam film 'Hridayam' for multiple languages
What's the story
Karan Johar has acquired rights to Hridayam, the Malayalam coming-of-age drama that released on January 21 this year.
Starring Pranav Mohanlal (son of Malayalam superstar Mohanlal), Kalyani Priyadarshan (filmmaker Priyadarshan's daughter), and Darshana Rajendran, Hridayam was a commercial and critical success.
Made on a budget of Rs. 6 crore, it earned a stunning Rs. 55 crore. Hridayam was the fifth directorial of Vineeth Sreenivasan.
Context
Why does this story matter?
Currently, Johar is also busy with Selfiee. Rumors suggest that it is the Hindi remake of the Malayalam blockbuster Driving Licence starring Prithviraj Sukumaran and Suraj Venjaramoodu.
If it is true, Hridayam will be the second Malayalam film to get a remake from Johar's stable.
While Selfiee stars Emraan Hashmi, Akshay Kumar, Nushrratt Bharuccha, and Diana Penty, Hridayam remake has no cast attached yet.

In his announcement, the Bollywood producer and director said, "I am so delighted and honored to share this news with you. Dharma Productions & Fox Star Studios have acquired the rights to a beautiful, coming-of-age love story, #Hridayam in Hindi, Tamil & Telugu."
Further, he thanked Visakh Subramaniam and his firm Merryland Cinemas, the production and distribution company of Hridayam, "for this huge win."

Also written by Sreenivasan, Hridayam narrates the story of Arun Neelakandan and traces his journey from ages of 17 to 30 years.
Hence, his college life gets featured where Darshana (Rajendran) is his love interest. But, they later split and Neelakandan moves on in his life and marries Nithya Arun (Priyadarshan).
Critics lauded Hridayam for its emotional quotient and said its story is relatable.

Apart from this film and Selfiee, Johar is also working on Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani, which marks his comeback to filmmaking after six years.
He had directed stories in two anthologies in between though.
